Chapter 15

“Jed, do you want some breakfast?” Diana asked as Jed strode into the tiny kitchen, his hair sticking up, still barefoot in his blue jeans as he buttoned up his shirt.

“Yeah, I can do it.” He leaned down and kissed Diana slowly, thoughtfully, a proper good-morning kiss to his wife.

“No, sit down. I’ll put some eggs on for you.”

“Can’t argue with that.” Jed stumbled and braced his hand on the wall.

“Jed, are you okay?” Diana gripped his arm and slid her other around his waist. “I’m calling the doctor.”

Footsteps clomped up the front steps. The door opened. “What’s going on?” Brad didn’t hesitate as he lunged forward and grabbed Jed’s other arm, pulled out a kitchen chair. “Sit down.”

“He lost his balance,” Diana shrieked. “I’m calling the doctor.”

“S—s—stop,” Jed stuttered.

Diana gazed down into Jed’s face. His eyes seemed glossy and distant. “Brad, something’s wrong.”

Brad yanked out his cell phone.

“Who are you calling?” asked Diana. She met the hard set of Brad’s jaw.

“An ambulance.”

“Stop it, both of you. Brad, hang up that phone,” Jed muttered, his voice clearer. His brows furrowed with irritation.

Brad disconnected. “Hey, look, you’re not okay. What happened there, Jed?” He rested his palm on the table and leaned down in front of his brother.

“I just turned around too fast. That’s all. Diana, I thought you were going to make me breakfast. I’m starving.” He flashed Diana one of his crooked grins.

She couldn’t believe it. “I’ll make you breakfast, and then I’m calling the doctor.” Diana hesitated and then grabbed a frying pan, cracked two eggs in it, and just happened to catch a glimpse of something that passed between Jed and Brad.

“What’s going on with you two?” She scrambled the eggs in the pan with a fork, listened to them sizzle, and set two pieces of bread in the toaster.

“Everything’s fine, Diana.” Jed didn’t look at her when he said it. In fact, he stared at Brad, who said nothing but stared right back at Jed with that same hard suspicious glance all the Friessen men seemed to possess.

Diana dished up the eggs, buttered the toast, and set it all before Jed. “Now I’m calling the doctor.” She reached for the phone, and Jed reached for her, but she yanked her arm away and glared first at Brad, then Jed. “I’m calling the doctor now, and you’re not stopping me.”

Maybe it was the determination that blazed like a torch heating her blood. Her face heated, and both Brad and Jed appeared to back up, even though they hadn’t moved.

“Jed, if I were you, I’d let your wife call the doctor, or I’ll have to hose both of us down from the fire she’s about to set on us,” Brad said as he rested a hand on Jed’s shoulder.

Jed merely grunted and shoved a forkful of eggs into his mouth.

Diana yanked a business card from the corkboard nailed to the dining room wall, where she pinned every important paper, notice, and business card.

She dialed the number.

“Doctor Hardy’s office.
